Sustainability
As an environmentally oriented company, we are prepared to take full responsibility for our environment. Our actions focus on the goal of continually improving quality of life. That's why we focus on sustainability in particular: Hotel Wesenufer was the first hotel in Upper Austria to achieve the EU Ecolabel in addition to receiving the Austrian Environmental Seal of Approval 2018. The hotel is also a member of the Climate Alliance..
The conscientious handling of foodstuffs is a key issue. We make every effort to buy locally and we are a part of the pilot project “United Against Waste”. We aim to use foodstuffs appropriately in every area of the hotel, working with our guests to take care of “Mother Earth” by reducing avoidable food waste by half! We also run a local business supplying local residents with everyday items, local products and hand-made gift items from sheltered workshops (also available to hotel guests).
When buying products and foodstuffs, we make sure that we buy from local suppliers wherever possible.
Efficient power and water consumption at the hotel
Heating and cooling
In winter the hotel is heated by geothermal heat pumps (170 kW) and in summer this system can be inverted to provide cooling for the seminar rooms. The heat pumps draw from a spring that was previously used for brewing beer, pulling heat or, when inverted, cold from this source. The entire hotel is equipped with underfloor heating. At calculated critical points where the underfloor heating is not sufficient, low-temperature heating elements have also been installed. In addition, the seminar rooms can be heated or cooled by means of ventilation and circulating air, which is then used for heat recovery or air-conditioning.
Water heating
Our hot water is heated by a separate geothermal heat pump. A solar facility with an area of 75 m² contributes to the hot water supply on sunny days. We also have a heat recovery system attached to the kitchen cooling units, enabling waste heat to be transferred to the household’s hot water supply. All coolrooms, cooling desks and almost all refrigerators in the service and kitchen areas are controlled by a central cooling facility.
Power consumption
Our electricity is sourced from 100 % renewable energy provided by our power supplier.
Thermal insulation
The “Danube View” section of the hotel is fully insulated. In the renovated heritage-listed building, it was only possible to install ceiling insulation.
Reducing plastic use throughout the hotel
A special team at the hotel are actively engaged in reducing plastic use and waste in all areas of operation.
