Roman remains along the Danube cycle path
The Romans left their distinctive mark on the Austrian landscape. The Danube cycle path (R1) runs along both the northern and southern banks of the river, following the natural northern border of the ancient “Imperium Romanum”, or Roman Empire. The cycle path is punctuated by Roman rest areas, providing information on Rome’s legacy where those long-ago legionaries guarded the “Limes”, the frontiers of the Empire. From their main stronghold, the fortified camp of Lauriacum in the region of present-day Enn, Rome’s military forces commanded a network of fortresses and outposts, guarding the Limes from Linz to Schlögen and Oberranna in the Upper Danube Valley.
The town of Wesenufer connects the Passau – Wesenufer and Wesenufer – Schloegen – Linz sections of the cycle path.
Passau –– Wesenufer (38 km)
This route begins at the former customs and border station of Batavis and runs along the right bank of the Danube, following the traces of the former Limes frontier road to Wesenufer. Oberanna is home to the Roman “Burgus” (watchtower), the best-preserved Roman construction in Upper Austria.
Wesenufer – Schlögen - Linz (61 km)
From Wesenufer, the route continues to the natural wonder of the Schlögener Loop. You can ride along either bank of the Danube, and include a ferry ride from Ottensheim to Linz in your journey. At the end of the Eferding basin, you will come to the Linz Gate. Soon you’ll find yourself in Linz, formerly the Roman trading town of Lentia.
